Confused about next steps

Iām 5 months away from graduating with my bachelors in Criminal Justice. I know I will need to go to the academy, but do I apply to a department first? Or do I just attend the academy on my own and apply after? Also, if I were to try to get sponsored to go through an academy how would I approach the department about that?
