I just recently got hired by a new agency after pretty much being washed out of my first agencyâs fto program 2 months ago. During fto at my first agency my second phase fto was the retail crime unit officer (it was a city with lots of businesses and white collar crime) so for almost the entirety of my second phase (about 1 month) I spend everyday driving around the mall parking lot, running license plates and responding to shoplifting calls (which ďż˝ of which the suspect had been detained by LP which meant that all I had to do was pat them down and issue them a shoplifting citation). During this time all sorts of calls would come out everything from domestics to PIC all of which my FTO told me we could not jump incase there was a shoplifting. There was also multiple times when I observed a traffic violation and would initiate the stop only for my fto tell me to âleave itâ and that there will be plenty of time going forward to do traffic stops. After my 2nd phase I was back on normal patrol with a different fto. At this point I hadnât responded to anything others then a shoplifting call for almost a month and I felt completely clueless on most call types. This being third phase I was expected to handle most calls with little to no assistance and I was not able to. My report writing and interviewing ability struggled greatly to which my fto advised me to simply âget better and slow downâ. Outlined in the fto packet given to each recruit was a list of training plans an fto could use to help a recruit who was struggling with a particular thing and never once did any of my ftoâs do any of these plans with me. I was marked behind schedule 2 times until I was pulled into a random meeting with 2 sergeants a lieutenant and my fto. During the meeting they presented me a packet of every mistake I had ever made with multiple written critiques on how I had not progressed during my time on fto. My Sargent told me I had 2 weeks to âfigure it outâ and reminded me that when they had âthese types of meetingâ that âit usually ends with the person failing so keep that in mindâ at this point I felt completely defeated and I ultimately resigned a couple days later.
Iâve since been hired my a new agency after explaining to them in detail the circumstances behind my previous fto experience while also expressing that it was ultimately on me to make the most of what I was given and I simply wasnât able to do so.
Im curious on other peopleâs thoughts of my experience?
