Sales commission drop

Post Body

I'm starting out in sales and I've done 7 months. I’m 19, so first real dive into this but I’ve found my feet. The commission rate when I started was 3.5%.

So far, I out performed the previous person in the role by an additional €248,000 in sales in that 7 month period. Now as a result of my performance and extra sales, my sales manager moved the new sales targets up today but also told me that my commission will drop to 1.2% and only if I make the new targets (which I set by making extra sales) each quarter, will I get an additional 1%

Did I just get totally shafted for doing good work? I can't wrap my mind around it as I don't have the experience

And that’s exactly how I feel. I’m baffled by this move. Manager tried to frame it as a good thing, promising ‘rewards’ down the road, but wouldn’t give a number. I asked for base salary increase and was told ‘not an option’ this is the new incentive scheme and it’s all that’s on offer. Asked me to commit in the room but I said I needed a day to understand it.

I’m really baffled. Was expecting foolishly I guess, a slight increased. Or just a thanks. But I didn’t foresee a drop. So I was lost for words

It was a written agreement and the figures were fixed. Commission rate was not variable, it was fixed at 3.5% ‘any increase being agreed performance based’, and no contract wording to suggest that it was later up for review for reduction. So I think what you’re saying is correct, it felt like a pay cut on the day and unilaterally decided by my manager.

That’s ok thank you. I am handing in my notice today as I was told “there is no wiggle room on base salary or commission. It’s a take it today or leave it situation’

So I’m leaving

They didn’t offer me an increase in my base salary. In fact they dropped it by €300 per month and cut my commission.

In the end, I left the position regardless and with two weeks to go, my manager begged me to stay and offered to reinstate my original agreement. I said no and left.
