what is the basic difference between chemistry and alchemy?

I was reading the Newtons primary field of study was alchemy, not physics. since such a smart dude thought it was worth studying I guess that means there was something to it, and not just ancient people being silly. what lead to chemistry overtaking alchemy in the academic community? How did they differ in studying the natural world?
