Was culture shock more jarring before modern mass media (Internet, TV, radio, newspapers etc)?
Post Body

In theory, I'm sure it has to true. Before people could see, hear about and read about other cultures, I would imagine that people of the world had little, if any, interaction with other cultures. Therefore, understanding of other cultures would have to be far shallower than now.

Do we have real historical evidence that suggests that culture shock back in the day was more profound, startling and maybe stressing than it is now? Are there primary sources that suggest this?
