So we know that the Brits wanted to sell something to China to balance the trade deficits due to purchasing large quantities of tea every year. They came up with opium and it got hundreds of thousands of Chinese people addicted to the drug. The image of Chinese people in that era is almost bound to opium. Chinese diaspora also opened opium houses in the west.
But opium was mainly gown outside of China. So why didnt other countries see widespread consumption of the drug? Europeans had some idea that it was bad for human health, but what about the others?
Edit: Yes I know the British started a war to sell opium to China. My question was why only China? British controlled vast territories. They could have sold it in Africa, India, Burma, and so many other places.
