Why didn't Japan ever try to colonize Hawaii?

Post Body

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Japan is the 2nd closest country to Hawaii, besides the US itself.

Plus, Japan started its colonial policy long before the US did, so why didn't the Japanese ever invade Hawaii? Were they afraid the US wouldn't like Japan having a colony on their backyard?
