What were the connotations of the song "Ochi Tchornya" in Hungary in the early twentieth century?

Post Body

In the 1940 film, The Shop Around the Corner, a product in said shop is a box that plays the song "Ochi Tchornya" when opened. Everyone dislikes this, and it's treated as something obviously unpleasant/annoying specifically because of the song.

Is there more context to this? How was this song seen in Hungary (and/or elsewhere) by the 1930s-1940s, and why?
