I was reading Georgian historical fiction last night, and the wealthy main character lived in the country but went to London for the first time and decided to do some shopping. She had money on her, but the amount of money she would have spent on clothes would not have fit in her bag of pin money.
So where did they keep all their money? Did they have banks as we know them? Did they just keep the 'cash' in their houses? If Mr. Darcy gets 30,000 a year, does someone come to Pemberly and drop off a bag of money? If they did have banks, were they unique to each city, or was there a network of banks? If I lived in London and went to Edinburgh, would I have access to money there somehow?
I'm sure that's not it, but I am having trouble picturing financial things like this. Thanks!
