how did Monarchist societies view Athenian democracy and the Roman republic?

today, in the west, we generally view these examples of government the beginning of the noble tradition of self rule that democratic countries enjoy today, but what of non-democratic countries? What would the general attitude towards these governments be in a mid-evil or Renascence royal court?
