Prompted by recent events, I'm thinking about the contrast between the two. 0 coups in india, many in pakistan's history. This is just a reddit link so not a great source but from what I've heard the pakistani military is fairly dominant in the political economy of pakistan. Then there are things like the fauji foundation. Does india have an equivalent in its political economy?
One of the comments in the aforementioned reddit threads cites this quote, apparently from Big Capital in an Unequal World: The Micropolitics of Wealth in Pakistan By Rosita Armytage
If an elite family has a son-in-law in the military, they will feel very safe. You know Sialkot? It is a very rich area and full of industrialists with huge wealth. We [the military] also have a base there. It is known as “The City of In-Laws” because young officers are sent there and then they find in-laws! The industri- alists make sure their daughters meet these young men. The parents are often not very well educated, but they have made sure their daughters are, and they need to find a good match for them. These boys are twenty-two years old, and they have a very good career, and very good prospects – everyone would like to marry them. Inter-marriage between military families is also very common, but the military boys also marry civilian girls, particularly girls from industri- alist families. The officer boys try to avoid marrying into the political families because it is not good to be too associated with politicians, it could damage your career. They prefer industrialist girls or even the daughters of bureau- crats with good standing. There is so much competition within the military that it is important to avoid anything that could damage your standing or reputation. But political families want to marry their daughters to military boys 200 per cent! My son is still in college but I’ve already had many families making enquiries about him regarding marriage with their daughters.
Does this sort of inter-penetration exist between the political, military, bureaucratic, and business elite have a history in india?
I would guess that part of it is motivated by pakistan's desire to keep up with the indian military, and being a smaller country, perhaps it needs to dedicate more of its economy towards the military, but I haven't checked the numbers on that.
