What proportion of a military is actually intended to fight?
Post Body

Hey guys. I've been reading a novel set in ww2 where two characters are drafted to the army, but both go to serve in none combat roles, far from the front. This got me wondering what proportion of a military is actually made up of people intended to fight and what proportion is support, logistics, infrastructure, etc.

Ideally I'd like to know how this has varied by time as warfare has changed but am particularly interested in ww1/ ww2.

Thank you
