In Bollywood movies about the British rule, especially in the 20th century, it is often shown that the police would torture dissidents and judges would get swayed by the British government. How historically accurate are these depictions of torture and lack of judiciary independence during that time?
Post Body
Specifically, I recently saw in the biopic Sardar Udham that he was tortured in prisons in London and the Scotland Yard coerced people into giving confessions against him. Along with that, the judge presiding over his case did not even let the defending lawyer present his case. While I could see how such actions took place in the British Raj, it was eye-opening to me that such things could happen in London itself. So I am curious about how historical these portrayals are.
