In Lanning & Cragg's "Inside the VC and NVA", on page 20, there's an interesting note saying that "during World War I France was so much in control of the lives of the Vietnamese people that 100,000 of them were sent to the Western front to fight under the tricolor."
The Vietnamese (Annamites) soldiers on the Western front seems like quite the obscure side note in comparison to the other more famous colonial contingents of the Great War. Does any of my fellow historians have any more information regarding this? Books or articles would be very helpful. I'd love to read more about this or have Lenning & Cragg's claim refuted. Eagerly awaiting answers!
