Why did the 1908 election see high turnout & why is it not well remembered?

Recently many articles have noted the record early voting numbers in the US could result in the highest voter turnout since the 1908 election.
Why did the 1908 election between Republican William Howard Taft & Democrat Williams Jennings Bryan (on his 3rd attempt no less) see such high turnout? If true, why has turnout decreased since then, even as American elections became more important on a global level?
How did the 1908 election's turnout compare to previous 19th century elections? And why do people nowadays not remember the significance of the election, whether for the contentious issues or the high participation?
