How prevalent was the belief that archaeologists could be cursed after entering tombs or other sacred places?
Post Body

I've been reading a little bit about the alleged "Curse of Tutankhamun" and am curious about the history of archaeology, and the belief that scientists and researchers could bring a "curse" upon themselves. How did these beliefs become prevalent? How prevalent were they really? How and when did we stop believing in that kind of stuff? Is this a phenomenon exclusive to Egyptology, or have other regions/areas of archaeological interest developed a "reputation"?
