What actually happened in the late 1960s/early 1970s around Highgate Cemetery in London, leading to reports of the 'Highgate Vampire' and mobs descending on the cemetery in March 1970?

I came across the wikipedia page for the Highgate Vampire recently. However, as is sometimes the case for wikipedia, there is a fair bit of [citation needed] and definitely much more context needed. So what exactly was behind this bizarre-seeming episode?
