What did North American colonies (Roanoke/Jamestown/Plymouth) need to do to be self-sustaining? What are the first things settlers did to establish a colony?
Post Body

As best as I can tell, early colonies tried to set up an agriculturally-sufficient community. But obviously that was a long term-solution, as they couldn't harvest food until they had been there for quite a long time. Did they initially simply live off of supplies and hunting/foraging?

Did they do anything besides agriculture? ie, Plimouth plantation has a blacksmith/forge for building tools. Did they come with supplies of metal to make into tools, or did they do any mining?
