What is the link between the northwestern United States and radical, racist, right-wing activity?

Post Body

Earlier this week, it was reported that a man was arrested and charged for domestic terrorism. The motion for his detention cited a letter where he states that white supremacists need to protect the northwest to preserve the white race (paraphrase, the exact words use language I'm loathe to repeat).

This isn't the first time that I've seen the northwestern US associated with white supremacy. Many white supremacist groups want to secede from the US and claim that area of the country as a future safe haven for fellow whites. What is the northwest's history with radical racist activity, and how did they come to imagine the northwest as a possible white homeland?
