How was the Tuskegee syphilis experiment undetected for such a long period of time?
Post Body
The Tuskegee syphilis experiment is a famous, utterly unethical experiment where large numbers of black men with syphilis were not treated, even after penicillin was approved as a treatment.
- Because syphilis is a STI, did the disease also spread to their families and the wider community?
- How did physicians treating their families, partners, etc not notice or suspect that the men had syphilis earlier?
- After the Tuskegee syphilis experiment was discovered, how much outcry was there? Did it have an impact on the black civil rights movement? What about the sexual revolution? Did it lead to an increase on conservative mores regarding sex in the black community?
- How did it affect relationships between the medical establishment and the black community?
