Since the beginning of the nation, various ethnicities have been discriminated against in various regions, despite the fact that they are racially "white." Even German immigrants have faced discrimination, including from Ben Franklin, who was of British descent.
Some of the last groups to be accepted as "white" in the US are Jews, Italians, and Irish, all of whom experienced discrimination into the early 20th century. While the existence of NINA signs is debatable, anti-Irish sentiment in the US is well-known; likewise for the Italians, and of course anti-semitism is still around today.
These same nationalities are well-known in the US for being involved with organized crime. The National Crime Syndicate was an affiliation of the Mafia, the Jewish mob, and the Irish mob.
What I'm wondering is: to what extent are the discrimination and organized crime related, as both cause and effect? Did the various crime families start out in response to ill treatment? Did the activities of these criminals result in increased resentment of the entire ethnicity in general? What is the connection between the [Jewish, Italian, Irish] mob and [Jewish, Italian, Irish] discrimination?
