So this is a bit of a long shot since I'm asking about a specific place as well as topic, but I keep wondering about the end of alcohol prohibition given the talk about Marijuana legalization in Canada.
When alcohol prohibition ended in Canada, Ontario responded by establishing a crown corporation to control sales of alcohol.
What was the reaction of the general public to this move? Were there attempts to replace or modify it when the next government came in? How effective was it at controlling bootleg alcohol? How did organized crime respond? Was there a period between when the legislation was announced and when the LCBO opened, and if so, what was the period characterized by?
