How do we know that social stratification happened in the Stone Age?

I was reading something that mentioned that society became more patriarchal during the late Paleolithic/early Neolithic, that gender roles began to emerge (male hunters, female gatherers) and that marriage customs may have developed during this period.
How do we know this? What kind of evidence is there? Or is this a myth?
