Modern Germany has diverse and thriving Jewish cultural and religious communities. Inspired by this Economist article, I find myself profoundly ignorant of how Jewish cultural and religious community groups came to re-establish themselves in the fabric of post World War Two and Cold War Germany. Did the post-war period see the emergence of a centralised German-Jewish cultural entity, or numerous, grass-roots community groups for German Jews - or both? Presuming organisations of some form developed, what sort of reception and interaction did they receive from the public, the German government, and the international community?
When I thought of this question, I had in mind primarily the BRD/FRG rather than East Germany. I'd be absolutely fascinated to hear about developments and Jewish cultural and religious life in the GDR, however!
