I am embarrassed to say that I don't know. I was discussing Luther with colleagues and a couple stated that Luther was lecherous. I said, "really?"
"Yes," they replied, "that is why he wanted to leave the celibacy of the priesthood behind."
This seemed to lack any firm footing, but as I had no evidence that he wasn't lecherous (knowing only that he married), I let it go.
Were my colleagues simply reading their own understandings back onto Luther? Were the right, but for all the wrong reasons? Or were they completely correct?
