How well known internationally would the battle of Hampton Roads in 1862 have been after the American Civil War?
Post Body
Ruperto Marchant Pereira, a chaplain in the Chilean army during the War of the Pacific (1879-1884), mentions in his letters during the conflict to a friend that the battle of Angamos between Chilean ironclads and a Peruvian ironclad (October 1879) was the only battle that he knew of that involved two ironclads facing off against each other. Marchant Pereira is a very educated man who references both the ACW and other contemporary conflicts in his letters, yet this omission made me curious. Just how well known would the battle of Hampton Roads be to an international audience interested in military matters?
