One of the first radio telescopes was set up by a man called Grote Reber in his back garden. Reber had no scientific training, and wasn't affiliated with a university. Nowadays, radio astronomy is a huge field, with mega-projects like the Square Kilometer Array being funded. How did we go from one situation to the other?
I know a decent amount on the work of Bernard Lovell and others at Jodrell Bank and the University of Manchester, but would like to know about other groups. I know Cambridge had a big group, but not that much more, and nothing about the situation in the US.
