Why did European medieval artists begin to depict the 'Wise Man' Balthasar as black?

Since Epiphany is approaching, I was wondering about the 'Wise Men' in Christian art. Specifically, at some point in the middle ages one of the traditional wise men is depicted with features associated with Africans. I don't believe he had been depicted as such before. Why did this depiction change?
