Why has there been constant denial or doubt about Friedrich von Steuben's baron title in the historiography of the American War of Independence?
Post Body

According to Paul Lockhart in his The Drillmaster of Valley Forge, he claims that for most of the historiography of the American War of Independence, historians have doubted or denied von Steuben's title. While there is no doubt today that he was indeed a baron, I wonder to what extent Lockhart's claim is true; does the historiography on the war deny or cast doubt on the title? If so, why? Does it have anything to do with von Steuben's actual false claims he made on his journey to America to draw attention to himself and gain a position in the Continental Army?
