How much did Vecna, Master of the Spider Thrown, really influence the field of necromancy?

Post Body
After reading about his exploits starting with the conquering of Fleeth, I understand how capable he was in military exploits, but I just am not convinced yet that he is this all powerful necromancer that has set the standard for that field of magic that no one has replicated since.
Browsing through tomes such as The Book of Vile Darkness shows that there existed much about the negative planes and undead before Vecna, and its continual expansion shows that the Necromancy is very much fine without him.
Perhaps someone at the Arcane Magistrate with access to more books than I can correct me.
