I'm interested in what political mechanisms they used to convince the Eastern Provinces to fight?
My understanding is neither of them had a serious military career that caused any particular legions to be personally loyal to them, and with Antony and Octavian ruling Rome, why the East would rise against them instead of submitting?
I've read that they were paying massive sums to the legionaries and centurions to guarantee loyalty before the battle, but how did they procure this money, and what authority did they have to be able to convince Eastern rulers to back them?
