When and how did certain minerals become valuable?

I understand that this borders on a scientific question but I am more interested on the historical impact of valuable minerals. Obvious examples are the rise of silver, gold, and diamonds. But also the more exotic types like the rise of rubies, pearls, and sapphires. More utilitarian-type minerals such as copper and iron could also be interesting but the less utilitarian and more valuable minerals are ones I personally am looking for insight on. Even if someone knows any resources regarding this topic (in any sense) please post it here.
