Would it be possible for a African-American girl to be friends with a Caucasian girl in 1853 New Orleans?
Post Body
This might be a very different question from what I would usually ask here, but this one was posed by my fiancée and I thought I'd ask our experts on here.
Recently, "American Girl" doll line released a new set of dolls which as is typical with the "American Girl" collection has a fictional historical background. These two particular dolls have their background story placed in 1853 New Orleans and while it is fictional, I wonder if something like this would be possible? How was race relations in New Orleans during the 1850's and would there be parents that would let their young children (these fictional girls are between the age of 9 to 12) play with other young children from another race?
