I found a book at work today written and published by the Kuomintang (in Paris) in early 1938 (dates within the book suggest they were writing around January-February 1938). I was struck because, while they mention the occupation of Nanjing, thereโs little mention of any details of the Rape of Nanjing, only vague allusions to the brutality of Japanese soldiers.
It got me wondering, how much would people outside of East Asia known about the details of the Rape of Nanjing in 1938 and at what point did information about the massacre become common knowledge?
