Why, in Ancient Rome, could slaves only give legal evidence under torture?
Post Body

I've been reading a book on Ancient Rome that mentions in passing that slaves could only give legal evidence under torture. (Apparently, this was also true in Ancient Greece.) Why would this be the case? Thanks!
