How and why did Islam change since the late 19th and early 20th centuries?

I don't have a very good historical understanding of Islam. All I know is that it used to be fairly 'liberal' by western standards but that changed with a rise in Islamic fundamentalism from around the turn of the 20th century so that the Islam of today is practically unrecognisable to the Islam of the past. But why exactly is that and what are the most important and surprising ways in which it differs? And did the West play any part in radicalising the muslim world?
