In the Baile de la Conquista (Dance of the Conquest) represented in some parts of Guatemala there is a character, named as Ajitz, who is supposed to be a sort of priest for Tekum (a military leader).
The word Ajitz appears in some K'iche dictionaries as meaning sorcerer or warlock (brujo) and this local source describes the character as a priest-diviner based in a temple on the nearby volcano (also gives some more detail about his tools and functions, sadly unsourced).
A few questions with this context:
- Is there evidence for the existence of Ajitz? Is it an actual name?
- Is there evidence that there ever was a temple in the mentioned volcano, or more generally in volcanos/mountains in the K'iche region?
- Even if he's not a historical figure. What kind of priest would Ajitz have been? What would be his functions and which god/deity would he be associated with?
EDIT: I'm not sure how this got tagged as Christianity nor do I know how to edit the tag.
