I’m trying to do some writing about the historical connection between the tolerance of violence against native peoples in the Dutch colony of New Netherlands. From my research it appears that the Pound Ridge Massacre and other such genocidal raids occurred without any internal consequence. In other words, it was seen as a necessary action to expand the wealth and security of the colony. Some other researchers have reacted to this thesis as being too harsh to the Dutch. Please direct me to some sources that indicate the Dutch Reformed Church or West India company punished genocide. Records show the WIC and church pastors had high control in the colony, yet were silent on this.
1) Am I wrong? Please explain.
2) Is this related to the Middle Ages Christian concept of “malicide”? Distinction between homicide and killing of evil itself (I.e righteous killing?)
I realize they later began to punish Kieft before his death. But that was from basically his squandering resources, not for bloodshed.
Thanks!
