Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, set in ancient Athens, features a group of 'Rude Mechanicals'; urban workers with jobs like weaver, carpenter or tailor. Knowing Shakespeare, his depiction of these people is probably more representative of 15-1600s CE England than of ancient Athens. What sort of working class did Greek cities actually have, and what would their lives have been like?
