When was the star and crescent first adopted by Muslims in the Middle East and Anatolia?
Post Body

I had heard that it was only after the conquest of Constantinople in 1453 since the symbol was associated with the city of Byzantion since ancient times.

This painting from the 14th century depicts the Arab army at the battle of Yarmouk flying a surely anachronistic star and crescent banner so I know that the symbol was used pre fall of Constantinople.
