Siberia seems to be incredibly foreboding territory, full of dense forests. Why would the Russians have colonized it so extensively in the 17th and 18th centuries? Many of the resources that we now know Siberia has, such as Oil and many minerals, either couldn't be found, or weren't valuable, in the past.
