Why did New World foods like chili peppers become staples in Asian cuisine, while foods like tomatoes and potatoes became staples in Europe but not Asia?

I'm especially curious about potatoes, given their status as foods that had a major impact in preventing famines in Europe, and Asia having no shortage of famines itself
