Before the EU and the Schengen Area, did all European countries have "hard" borders?

I think "hard" borders - those with security guards, customs, and sometimes walls is a fairly new idea but before the Schengen region were there guards at border crossings in Europe? Did other free movement regions exists between certain countries in say the 18th or 19th centuries? When borders weren't in place, how did countries secure their borders from invasion? When they were secured, did people have passports?
