The speed of German unification has always surprised me, both in how rapidly the myriad of independent German states were brought into one nation, and how a newly formed nation so quickly centralized and became one of the world's strongest military and economic powers.
Had a lot of economic and political integration already taken place prior to the formation of the North German Confederation? And for that matter, what did further integration look like during the first years of the German Empire, and what were some of the particular challenges that were presented?
