When did lions start to become a symbol of power in Europe?

What’s the lore of lions becoming a symbol of power in old Europe? I know many knights would have lions on their heraldry / engravings of them in armor and I know they were also the sigil for many houses/lords. But where did this trend originate since these big cats are not native to Europe and I doubt they would have been imported this early on, even for the ultra wealthy. Any enlightenment into this would be appreciated!
