What did Liberal and conservative mean since the terms where coined?

I was always taught that liberal meant in favour of change, and conservative meant opposed to change.
then I watched Lincoln and in that time conservative meant "change the laws to ban slavery" and liberal meant "don't change the laws in regards to slavery". How did this sit with the general definition I gave above?
any other uses of the terms we might find surprising today?
