We know of the stories of how the Roman republicans legions managed to defeat the Macedonian style phalanx at battles such as Pydna and Cynoscephalae, but how did they fare against the holder classical hoplite phalanx used by the smaller Greek city states such as the Achaean and aetolian leagues?
While the Macedonian phalanx largely became their successors, there seems to be evidence that the older hoplite formation was still used, for instance by other Greek infantry/mercenaries that accompanied Alexander that apparently guarded the rear? So I doubt it would have been completely phased out by the time of Cynoscephalae.
