I'm doing research on an individual who lived in the mid-late 1800s in London, England. There is no information on his early life as you might expect.
This person was born to poverty, and his father died when he was young. The mother was forced to turn to sex work.
What would have been the life of this boy in this time?
Would he have essentially have lived his life on the streets and got into petty crime? Or is that something that's coloured by images of Dickens and not reality?
Would the boy have been given up to the workhouse?
What were prospects for education?
What chances existed to exit this life, if any?
Obviously, we can't say for certain what happened, but what would be typical?
