Sunburn question

I went out on a boat and didn't wear a shirt but did wear sun block. This was on Sunday. I came back and was all red and sunburnt. The next day was painful so I've been taking Motrin and using after sun lotion with aloe in it. This morning I woke up and was in more pain than yesterday. Is this normal? Should I continue my current regime or is there something I can be doing to at least make it hurt less.
