So this happened several years ago. I'm not looking to do anything or litigate in any way. Just want confirmation or opposition that I was wrongfully terminated.
So I (M 44) worked in the events industry for a local nonprofit. I met a woman at an after-hours event. Conversation seemed friendly & flirty. We exchanged business cards. Her's had her cell phone so later that evening, 8 pm-ish, I sent her a text.
Again, the conversation seemed flirty & thought she may be interested in seeing each other outside of work events. I asked her out. She told me she wasn't interested. I apologized & immediately stopped texting her.
Almost 2 YEARS later, I get called into my boss's office. I am told that a woman has made a complaint against me for sexual harassment & I am dismissed. Honestly, I had forgotten about the incident with this young woman and it didn't even occur to me that she was the complainant. I asked for more details: what did I do? Who did I offend? Allow me to perhaps explain myself? I am not given any more details as the individual fears retaliation.
Its only a month later, after I am denied unemployment benefits, that I find out who the complainant was. I felt like I should not have been let go. Once she informed me she wasn't interested I immediately stopped texting her. It's not like I continued asking her out.
Was this an instance of wrongful termination or did they do the prudent thing in order to protect themselves as an organization? Thanks in advance.
